Take Me Back to Church!

An absolutely HUGE fund raising concert has been organised by comic M.C. and gospel personality Anthony ‘pass the mic’ King and Patrick Medley aka Bishop Shacklefoot on Friday 15th February 2019 in aid of John Fisher and his work with IDMC Gospel Choir and the children’s music and arts initiative, We Sing U Sing. As you would have read in last months news update, John suffered a massive blow at the start of the new year with all his business possessions being destroyed in the Shurgard warehouse fire (read the full story below.) Generously, John’s musical friends, fellow gospel artists and peers have joined together and agreed to put on a fundraising concert titled, “TAKE ME BACK TO CHURCH”, where artists such as Noel Robinson, Isaiah Raymond Dyer, Anu Omideyi, Nicky Brown and many more will come and show their love and support for John and the amazing work he has been doing for over 40 years.

Premier Gospel Radio Awards 2018

IDMC receive their award
Did someone say Gospel Choir of the year!!! Yes, Yes, Yaaaassss! The rumours are true! IDMC had the pleasure of taking receipt of the Premier Gospel Radio award for Choir of the Year 2018 at what was only the third Premier Gospel Awards ceremony. The star-studded event took place at the new flagship venue in Croydon – Trinity Baptist Church, Oasis House, where anticipations and expectations were running high. The explosively labelled ceremony brought out some of the biggest names in the UK Gospel scene. Legendary artists such as London Community Gospel choir and newer guests as Faith Child and Becca Folkes provided live performances on the night. The awards were hosted by Lady T and Theo Manderson from Premier Gospel. The venue was packed full of gospel music supporters from all both sides of the track. Maulin and Courtney were present and correct to represent John and the choir as he was unable to attend the ceremony. As the evening progressed, the pair joked about what they would say if IDMC were to win but they both kind of put it out of their minds as IDMC for so many years been the bridesmaid, never the bride! The moment arrived for the winner of Gospel Choir of the Year to be announced. Adaeze and Uzoma read out the nominees….and the winner is IDMC!!!!  The building erupted with massive cheers, however Maulin and Courtney remain seated, jaws dropped and looking slightly aghast, Maulin turns to Courtney and asks, “Did I just hear right?!” As the shock rescinded both made it to the podium very nervous. Maulin gave a short thank you and left Courtney to add a bit more meat to the bones for the rest of the speech. When John learnt of the good news he remarked jokingly “I told them to have something ready!!!” and added “We are all very proud of IDMC’s achievements over the past twelve months and want to work harder to share the gift we call gospel music to the world”. Official Album Launch

Wednesday 21st February 2018 marked a momentous moment in IDMC history as John Fisher and the team united with friends, well wishers, industry executives, media bigwigs and politicians and spent the evening in the presence of His Excellency Mr Seth George Ramocan the High Commissioner for Jamaica, at the Jamaican High Commission celebrating the official launch of IDMC Gospel Soul Choir’s 9th album release – ‘Hideaway Live’.  Host and compere for the prestigious evening was Anthony King, who brought some cheeky laughs, setting the atmosphere for what proved to be a superb evening.

After the opening prayer from John’s pastor, Bishop Eric Brown of NTCG Brixton Community Church, IDMC delivered an awesome arrangement of the Jamaican National Anthem, followed by a welcome and address from IDMC’s alto section singer – Elaine Grant who composed and delivered her speech in a way that would have been right up there alongside that of Barack Obama!  Elaine introduced his Excellency Seth George Ramocan to give his address, and unsurprisingly he mentioned that Elaine’s address was so powerful, he really didn’t have much else to add!

Additional speeches were provided by IDMC stalwarts Jo Bega, Courtney Hoillett, Sandra Johnson and the lovely Mrs Fisher. IDMC continued to perform more songs from the new album, which were well received by the adoring audience. Good friend to John, Paul Harrison who has been working very closely alongside John and the choir, delivered an address sharing the Adopt a Clinic project from which a percentage of proceeds from sales of the album will go towards.   Also in the house that night was Bishop Shacklefoot who delivered one of his sermons (if you know of Shacklefoot you will be laughing out loud at this point!) in his very own comedic style, which left the audience roaring with laughter throughout.  Another awesome moment came when great friend to John, Pastor Mike White of The Tab Church London, delivered a short encouragement and a call for all ministers to surround John and the Album. They prayed and released IDMC’s 9th album into the atmosphere… Buy your copy of Hideaway Live Donate to the Adopt a Clinic appeal here

Hideaway Live – New Album!

It’s with great pride that John Fisher took delivery of IDMC Gospel Soul Choirs’ latest release Hideaway Live!  The new album is a combination of recordings from the choirs’ previous performances at the Hideaway in August and December 2017 and had its official release in February 2018 in prestigious launch ceremony held at the Jamaican High Commission in London’s South Kensington.  Knowing that the Hideaway held superior recording and production facilities, John felt inspired to create a recording project from the two performances.  The tracks on the album handpicked by John, reflect the history of the choirs’ twenty-four years in the industry and contribution to the UK gospel scene.  In addition to IDMC classics such as “Only You”, “More Than Conquerors” and “Soul Food” there is a sprinkling of definitive gospel covers such as Aretha Franklin’s “How I Got Over”, Hezekiah Walker’s “Power Belongs to God” and the Kitty Wells classic “God Put a Rainbow in the Cloud”. The album also contains new material penned by John himself, such as “Beauty in Me”, and “Let There Be Love”, suffice to say that this album has more variety than a KFC bucket! Upon listening to the album, the impression that you are left with is one of a vibe that exudes a cross between soul and funk, which somehow merges into traditional gospel music, creating a diverse fusion of various musical genres, resulting in the listener having had their taste buds well and truly tickled! This project is IDMC’s ninth album release and it truly captures the energy and dynamism of IDMC live in concert.   Get your copy here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/hideaway-live/1348501220  or send an email to wendy@idmcgospel.com  A percentage of the proceeds from sales of this album will be donated to the “Adopt a Clinic” initiative. This charity works to support and refurbish health clinics in Jamaica, West Indies.

3GENERATE Children & Youth Assembly…24th – 26th November 2017

Destination Southport!

A bitterly cold November weekend saw a six piece unit from IDMC heading to the northwesterly shores of England to engage in their third year of 3Generate, the Methodist Church’s annual nationwide assembly of over 1000 children and youth ranging from ages 8 to 23 with the theme for this year being #wonderfully prophetic

A Friday evening departure from north London was at approximately 5pm, taking John and the team around 4 hours to drive to the chillier climes of Southport brrrrrr!

Upon arrival the team registered, checked in and were assigned to their chalets (which were in the not so palatial grounds of Pontins holiday park), put the heating on, have a quick freshen up and then begin the evening set at 10pm with the gospel choir big sing a la IDMC!

Hosted by the lovely Sanya Strachan of the Methodist Church, the kids were eager, hyped, and ready for IDMC to take to the stage in ‘Lunars’ and it is safe to say that their anticipation was satisfied with John on keys and Courtney Hoillett III on drums, the team plowed into an hour long set of gospel and worship songs including God is good, Let there be Love and the Hezekiah Walker classic – Every Praise. Session one checked!

Exhausted but in good spirits the team grabbed a quick snack and headed to their lodgings for the night in preparation for the 9am worship session tomorrow morning.

Saturday morning was worship time for all ages in the ‘Fun Factory’ the main stage for contributors and acts. In a similar vein to the evening before, John and the team stirred the hearts of worshippers young and old with a half hour set of songs, setting the tone for the rest of the day.

With some freetime on their hands, what better way to clear out the cobwebs than with a morning walk along the blustery shores of Ainsdale beach, taking in the stunning scenery of the sand dunes and serenity of the long and wide expanse of beach and also time to fit in a quick promo for the upcoming Christmas 2017 gig at the Hideaway!

Moving into the afternoon saw John leading a workhop session in the marquee aptly titled by the church as ‘Agents of Change’. John taught the Kirk Franklin classic ‘I Smile’ to a full marquee of talented children and young adults who verse by verse, caught onto the song very quickly and were soon confident in singing the whole thing unaided!

Once the workshop had concluded John treated the team to lunch in a local cafe in town and with bellies full (really, really full, amazing portions Southport whoop whoop!) headed back to camp to catch some of the other activities taking place and to prepare for the final session of the day – Gospel Singing Together in the Lunars stage.

Here John got the kids to showcase ‘I Smile’ which they had learned earlier on in the day and get everyone on board with a gospel style of worship, inviting the presence of God in with the well known IDMC song ‘In Your Presence’ as well as many others.

With the whole weekend now winding down, Sunday saw John & co. head to Lunars to take to the stage for the final time for one more worship session.

With the emphasis on the theme #wonderfully prophetic it was quite apt to include in the final session for the day the IDMC classic ‘A Still Small Voice’ onto the setlist tuning into the focus of the weekend that being hearing from God.

The worship provided by IDMC was intertwined with videos from 3Voice, scripture, testimonies and prayer. It was an amazing time seeing young people worship and their hunger for more of God, a truly humbling time.

Much as quiet time is appreciated, its good to know that God loves a hard praiser and to draw the night to an end John pulled out the big soul funk number ‘Soul Food’ which had everyone on their feet praising and dancing to the impromptu dance routine that John whipped up!

The team packed up and headed back south to London (to warmer temperatures praise God!) from what had been another memorable and blessed weekend away at 3Generate.

IDMC @ Afrikids 10th anniversary Dinner

Thursday 20th September saw Gospel come to the Natural History Museum, helping the Afrikids organisation, lift the spirits of all who attended to raise funds for the charity & celebrate its 10th anniversary. John Brought down a 16 piece IDMC unit to the Natural History Museum, where after the general public had left, the building was transformed into an amazing and elegant setting for a dinner party to the highest quality… IDMC were asked to prepare and perform the Lion King Classic “Circle of Life” as part of a presentation with a video in the background, and then a full 30 minute set. It was a beautiful night in amazing surroundings, and we were really privileged to be a part of a great night.

IDMC & London Fashion week ft. Philip Treacy

Saturday 8th September, John got a call from long-time friend Joe Pitt, inviting IDMC on a session for a top fashion designer at the London Fashion Week. John thought it sounds like a nice gig. The following Tuesday, when John woke up he never thought I would be meeting the Legend that is Philip Treacy, and then also meet another Big Legend, Michael Bush, the designer and creator of all of late Michael Jacksons stage clothes, and then to be in the same room with all his outfits.. What a Tuesday…   So Sunday 15th IDMC performed at the Royal courts of Justice in the strand. The venue which is normally a massive corridor was transformed into a fashion catwalk full of celebrities. The show was opened by Lady Gaga, and the show showcased models wearing Michael Jackson’s outfits with extra- ordinary head gear from the Philip Treacy. In the audience were invited celebrities, Bryan Ferry, and good fried of Philip, Grace Jones. IDMC closed the show with a 19 voice choir all robed for the occasion, singing “Will you be there” while the models took to the stage one more time, and the introduction of the legendary designer. Well done IDMC

IDMC Sainsbury’s tour

To help celebrate Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth’s jubilee, J. Sainsbury’s had a massive UK promotion of an event it was having at Clapham Common in July and help launch various promotions all tied into the Queens Jubilee, and enlisted IDMC to help highlight this special time in the U’s history. A small 6 piece choir toured the UK bringing joy to shoppers in over 20 Sainsbury’s superstores around the country as well as at their head offices in Derby and London. Idmc sang as shoppers walked past, some smiling, some stopping to take pictures, and we even had staff join the choir in a few store. The team had a brilliant time, tiring but brilliant. We are grateful to our agents and Sainsbury’s for looking after us so well.

IDMC@ We Sing U Sing Summer song Music festival

For the 5th year John and IDMC have hosted the spectacular Summer Song Gospel music Festival, held at the Fair field’s halls Croydon. This evening showcases the talents of children and young people from in and around the Croydon and south London Area. This year the event saw John and IDMC joined by a 600 piece children’s gospel choir as well as other guests. The IDMC team work very hard back stage under the guidance of project manager, and John’s wife Maulin. Along  with an army of volunteers to make the event go smoothly IDMC still have time to change into their performance gear and thrill the 1200 people who packed into the venue to witness this great show. Although IDMC’s following always enjoy the choirs work and performances, they were happy to be upstaged by 600 inspirational and talented children who don’t usually get an opportunity like this. Well done IDMC, but an event bigger WELL DONE to the children
