Premier Gospel Radio Awards 2018

IDMC receive their award
Did someone say Gospel Choir of the year!!! Yes, Yes, Yaaaassss! The rumours are true! IDMC had the pleasure of taking receipt of the Premier Gospel Radio award for Choir of the Year 2018 at what was only the third Premier Gospel Awards ceremony. The star-studded event took place at the new flagship venue in Croydon – Trinity Baptist Church, Oasis House, where anticipations and expectations were running high. The explosively labelled ceremony brought out some of the biggest names in the UK Gospel scene. Legendary artists such as London Community Gospel choir and newer guests as Faith Child and Becca Folkes provided live performances on the night. The awards were hosted by Lady T and Theo Manderson from Premier Gospel. The venue was packed full of gospel music supporters from all both sides of the track. Maulin and Courtney were present and correct to represent John and the choir as he was unable to attend the ceremony. As the evening progressed, the pair joked about what they would say if IDMC were to win but they both kind of put it out of their minds as IDMC for so many years been the bridesmaid, never the bride! The moment arrived for the winner of Gospel Choir of the Year to be announced. Adaeze and Uzoma read out the nominees….and the winner is IDMC!!!!  The building erupted with massive cheers, however Maulin and Courtney remain seated, jaws dropped and looking slightly aghast, Maulin turns to Courtney and asks, “Did I just hear right?!” As the shock rescinded both made it to the podium very nervous. Maulin gave a short thank you and left Courtney to add a bit more meat to the bones for the rest of the speech. When John learnt of the good news he remarked jokingly “I told them to have something ready!!!” and added “We are all very proud of IDMC’s achievements over the past twelve months and want to work harder to share the gift we call gospel music to the world”. 24th Anniversary Celebration Concert

How I Got Over
SHOWTIME! After weeks in the planning, the evening that marked 24 years of the journey of IDMC Gospel Choir had finally arrived! Soooo, lets have a tiny bit o’ history then, because stage was re-set at NTCG Brixton Community Church, where IDMC’s journey had started 24 years previously in February 1994 and the choir had released their first album ‘Prove Me’ ! FACT TIME! Ever wondered what the letters IDMC actually stand for?… Well over the years there have been some minor changes, the letters remained the same, but the meaning has evolved slightly from (NTCOG) – Inter District Mass Choir to Inter Denominational Music Choral and finally to what it is now – Individuals Dedicated to the Ministry of Christ the true heart to what IDMC is. Back to the evening… The production on the night was on point, with a full light show and staging brought in which totally changed the ambience of the venue. John is a man who loves his music, so it was no surprise to see the size of the band he had on hand, led by his sons Andre Fisher on drums and Dayna Fisher on bass guitar, and included keyboard and Hammond players Enoch John, Iziah Yard and Paul Watson, alongside legend Joseph Ross and percussionist Mike Fergusson. Guest artists featuring on the night were
John leading IDMC
Tab Worship, Shantéh Fuller and the awesome Volney Morgan & New-Ye, all delivering first class performances of their own material. These are all artists that are dear to John’s heart as he continues to support and endorse new and emerging talent from the UK. The evening of course belonged to the delivery of IDMC’s new album, with the already at capacity audience clapping, dancing and singing along to popular IDMC classics as well as some old time American numbers, as the choir performed a tribute set to the late Edwin Hawkins, after which IDMC continued partying well on into the night delivering new songs from its album. It was an overwhelming atmosphere with everyone in attendance wishing every success on IDMC’s continued journey which looks like it will be going from strength to strength. Official Album Launch

Wednesday 21st February 2018 marked a momentous moment in IDMC history as John Fisher and the team united with friends, well wishers, industry executives, media bigwigs and politicians and spent the evening in the presence of His Excellency Mr Seth George Ramocan the High Commissioner for Jamaica, at the Jamaican High Commission celebrating the official launch of IDMC Gospel Soul Choir’s 9th album release – ‘Hideaway Live’.  Host and compere for the prestigious evening was Anthony King, who brought some cheeky laughs, setting the atmosphere for what proved to be a superb evening.

John, HE Ramocan, Bishop Brown, Paul Harrison
After the opening prayer from John’s pastor, Bishop Eric Brown of NTCG Brixton Community Church, IDMC delivered an awesome arrangement of the Jamaican National Anthem, followed by a welcome and address from IDMC’s alto section singer – Elaine Grant who composed and delivered her speech in a way that would have been right up there alongside that of Barack Obama!  Elaine introduced his Excellency Seth George Ramocan to give his address, and unsurprisingly he mentioned that Elaine’s address was so powerful, he really didn’t have much else to add!
HE Seth George Ramocan
Additional speeches were provided by IDMC stalwarts Jo Bega, Courtney Hoillett, Sandra Johnson and the lovely Mrs Fisher. IDMC continued to perform more songs from the new album, which were well received by the adoring audience. Good friend to John, Paul Harrison who has been working very closely alongside John and the choir, delivered an address sharing the Adopt a Clinic project from which a percentage of proceeds from sales of the album will go towards.   Also in the house that night was Bishop Shacklefoot who delivered one of his sermons (if you know of Shacklefoot you will be laughing out loud at this point!) in his very own comedic style, which left the audience roaring with laughter throughout.  Another awesome moment came when great friend to John, Pastor Mike White of The Tab Church London, delivered a short encouragement and a call for all ministers to surround John and the Album. They prayed and released IDMC’s 9th album into the atmosphere… Buy your copy of Hideaway Live Donate to the Adopt a Clinic appeal here

Hideaway Live – New Album!

It’s with great pride that John Fisher took delivery of IDMC Gospel Soul Choirs’ latest release Hideaway Live!  The new album is a combination of recordings from the choirs’ previous performances at the Hideaway in August and December 2017 and had its official release in February 2018 in prestigious launch ceremony held at the Jamaican High Commission in London’s South Kensington.  Knowing that the Hideaway held superior recording and production facilities, John felt inspired to create a recording project from the two performances.  The tracks on the album handpicked by John, reflect the history of the choirs’ twenty-four years in the industry and contribution to the UK gospel scene.  In addition to IDMC classics such as “Only You”, “More Than Conquerors” and “Soul Food” there is a sprinkling of definitive gospel covers such as Aretha Franklin’s “How I Got Over”, Hezekiah Walker’s “Power Belongs to God” and the Kitty Wells classic “God Put a Rainbow in the Cloud”. The album also contains new material penned by John himself, such as “Beauty in Me”, and “Let There Be Love”, suffice to say that this album has more variety than a KFC bucket! Upon listening to the album, the impression that you are left with is one of a vibe that exudes a cross between soul and funk, which somehow merges into traditional gospel music, creating a diverse fusion of various musical genres, resulting in the listener having had their taste buds well and truly tickled! This project is IDMC’s ninth album release and it truly captures the energy and dynamism of IDMC live in concert.   Get your copy here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/hideaway-live/1348501220  or send an email to wendy@idmcgospel.com  A percentage of the proceeds from sales of this album will be donated to the “Adopt a Clinic” initiative. This charity works to support and refurbish health clinics in Jamaica, West Indies.

The Hideaway…Saturday 12th August 2017

Saturday 12th August 2017, saw IDMC take the stage of the award winning Hideaway Jazz Club in south London. From prior knowledge Bazil Meade and the London Community Gospel Choir (LCGC), are the only other gospel act to have had performed there three years prior, therefore to John, it was important that the lead up, communication and preparation was right for this gig. This proved to be so, with support given to IDMC from agent Graeme Mall, assistance from the venue, increased production rehearsals and tickets selling well, it all helped put a spring in the step of IDMC as they prepared a sixteen song show set. John envisaged, taking the visitors on a journey through the music of IDMC covering their well known, popular songs. Who knew that when John was to ask how many people were seeing IDMC for the first time, that half of the audience would put up their hands! The show that had sold out the day before was standing room only. The atmosphere was on point, the audience had eaten a hearty meal, and were ready to party! John was joined on stage by a fourteen piece choir that consisted of ten vocalists, a four piece band and John, so room on the stage was pretty tight! From the first track which showed off the vocal talents of long time member Courtney Hoilett, the stage had been set for a groovy, soulful, gospel experience and judging from the big smiles and positive responses to every song, delighted the audience. John took a moment to celebrate the anniversary of the 55th Jamaican Independence by doing a version of the Jamaican national anthem which had Jamaicans and non-Jamaicans alike standing to honour the anniversary.   As a mentor, John regularly shares his platform with up and coming artists and on this occasion, allowed assistant choir director, Shantéh to showcase one of her songs. The first half ended on the big funk jam ‘Soul Food’ which not only boasted the vocal power of the choir, but also showcased the skilled band of musicians that IDMC are so proud to work with, which was headed by John’s sons Andre and Dayna Fisher. The second half started cool enough and then exploded into IDMC’s version of US gospel icon, Hezekiah Walker’s classic song ‘Power Belongs to God’. The temperature on stage and in the audience continued to soar to the high 90’s! Another high point in the show was the special guest appearance of long time friend, UK based, and well known on the gospel scene Junior Robinson. His soulful tone was an instant hit with the audience. The banter between John, Junior and the audience was hilarious and led to another pinnacle in the show as together they delivered a masterful version of Rev. Al Greens’ classic, ‘Let’s Stay Together’. The IDMC classic ‘Victorious’ finished a perfect night of music. John and IDMC have set the bar very high for gospel music, in what is an award winning venue, and notably earning them a return there very soon…

JUMP Music Awards…Saturday 21st October 2017

Three o’clock saw the arrival of IDMC at the amazing City Gates Church in Ilford. The gig which saw a selection of the choir, specifically sopranos Maulin, Shirley, and Genevieve, altos Wendy, Fabien, and Elaine and tenors Courtney and Alex join John Fisher to be a part of a top gospel music industry awards evening. As the largest group performing, IDMC had the stage fully setup for their show, and sound checks went well. The evening was a great celebration of the UK Gospel scene, recognising those who were producing music videos. With a host of categories, all the nominees were worthy to be nominated and the winners were definitely top of their game. After a long evening and with great performances from Evans Ogboi, and Sam Moore to name a few, IDMC took to the stage just after 10 o’clock as the closing act. With an audience who were preparing to head home, John was still able to command their attention and created a party atmosphere as they laid down two of IDMC’s funkiest joints, ‘Victorious’ and ‘Soul Food’.Working from live backing tracks on this occasion the choir delivered with force, which gave the audience no choice but to join them and created a fitting end to a great show.

Arctic Gospel Festival…Friday 6th to Sunday 8th October 2017

Friday John and a selection of IDMC left the UK on voyage to Tromsø Norway to join their great friends, Jardar Johansen of Gospel Company (Gospel Compagniet for those of you fluent in Norwegian :-)) and two other choirs for the first ever Arctic Gospel Festival! After an extremely early flight on Friday morning John and the choir, had the chance to rest and re-cooperate, and upon arrival in Norway were greeted by their hosts with big hugs and new introductions meeting the Care Gospel Choir and Koret Varres Gospel choir. After the evening meal, a time of fellowship and instructions for the weekend commenced, followed by John leading the first workshop with the mass choir, directing the song ‘Victorious’ for one of the finale numbers. The sound was amazing, and the choirs worked tirelessly. After a short break, the 80 strong mass choir were treated to a vocal master class from the awesome Claes and what he doesn’t know about the voice and how it works isn’t worth talking about! Everyone worked diligently, finding new depths of vocal strength that had previously lay dormant!   Saturday began with another learning session from Claes (which was awesome), John having another round of teaching and Jardar instructing the other finale songs. After which it was time for lunch. The hosts had also organised a gospel flash mob performance, which saw the members of the various choirs strategically placed around the beautiful environs of the shopping mall. It was sensational! There was a massive audience on all levels awaiting the performers on the ground floor to sing, so its easy to imagine their shock and delight when the incognito choir members started belting out songs! Such great fun!   The day progressed and the team moved on to the visually stunning Cultural Centre which was the venue for the nights proceedings. The band and sound team were already set, so the mass choir sound checked, then each other choir in turn. When it came to the show, the vibe and the atmosphere was fantastic. Audiences across Europe are traditionally quite reserved and this was evident in Tromsø. Understandably the crowd loved the sets and showed their appreciation by clapping politely at the end of them…but then came John & IDMC, and you know if the crowd are not bouncing with John there’s trouble! (needless to say they were really tired after..LOL!).   The host choir Gospel Company delivered a masterful set with awesome solo work from dedicated singers. With all choirs delivering first-class performances from start to finish, this festival is set to be remembered for a years to come.   Sunday saw the choirs’ visit various churches in the area, and for John and IDMC they visited a church which carries a similar feel and essence to Hillsong church, but with the added extra of Norwegian character and culture. The welcome from Pastor Samuel and the church was another extension of the beautiful Norwegian hospitality echoed through the entirety of the visit. IDMC sang the initial worship song set, songs ministered included, ‘In your Presence’, ‘Every Praise’ and ‘Heart Lord’ before the delivery of an appreciable word by Minister Peter. IDMC were then invited back on to have a gospel praise party with the guys singing ‘Love’, ‘God is Good’ and ‘Soul Food’. It was altogether a wonderful morning.   After lunch and goodbyes to Care Gospel and Koret Varres , it was time for IDMC and Gospel Company to head back to the venue to prepare for the album launch concert and party for Gospel Company’s first recorded album!!!   IDMC got the party started, launching into the big groove track “I Worship You” this continued through to timely ballads such as ‘Love Medley’ and ‘Walk with Me’ ending with the audience jamming their hardest to ‘Soul Food’. IDMC were joined on stage again by Gospel Company as they performed Victorious together, allowing a seamless stage change.. Massive sound. It was now time for Gospel Company to take the reigns, it was their moment to shine and they literally smashed it POW!! Every song was delivered with such excellence of sound, vocal ability and spiritual understanding. Their soloists, Katherine, Sylvia, Marvin, Ingrid and of course Jardar delivered with so much empathy and feeling, you could mistakenly believe that you were listening to a UK or US gospel choir, such was the high standard.   Big props to all of the choirs who possibly took Monday off to recover because they really worked hard and delivered an awesome experience for not only the audiences on both nights but for us as performers. The level of detail given to the care of IDMC was superb, and of course a huge amount of love is expressed to the host families who opened their doors, rolled out the red carpet and took care of the choir members.     The bond between IDMC & Gospel Company has steadily built for the past three years, and grows stronger on every meeting. Roll on year four of our relationship!

IDMC in Venice Italy with New Generation Gospel Choir…Friday 19th to Sunday 21st May 2017

After a two hour evening flight, fifteen piece IDMC Gospel choir landed at Marco Polo airport in Venice. Assuming to be picked up by a couple of representatives from New Generation gospel choir…however this was not the case! Once assembled and ready to depart choirmaster John heralded, “ You ready gang, here we go!” the choir were not ready for what was around the corner. To their amazement, in waiting were thirty members of New Generation gospel choir with welcome banners singing and dancing to an African Gospel medley! To be overwhelmed was an understatement! In shock and awe, IDMC that little old choir originating from South London stood there gobsmacked that after twenty three years, they could be welcomed to Italy in such a way as this!! AWESOME! Parked outside was a fifty-three seater coach waiting to take choir members to their respective hosts homes where one was treated like royalty!   Day 2 saw both IDMC and New Generation Gospel Choir come together for a workshop session led by both choir directors. The choirs were preparing the finale songs for the end of the concert. The atmosphere was already amazing, the sound fantastic and the fellowship was lovely. Under the leadership of Federico Fe Fiorentin, New Generation gospel choir have always viewed IDMC as it’s mentor choir and sing a lot of John’s songs in their repertoire, hence the love for everything IDMC, and as a choir in their own right, they have an awesome sound. Later on in the day the choirs moved to an amazing auditorium where the sold out gig was being held. The sound checks went well with the IDMC band, which was MD’d by Andre and included legendary UK gospel bass player Steve Yarde, and one of the UK’s top female keyboardists Sharlene Llewellyn which created an tremendous sound. At opening time, the doors let in a massive sea of people and the venue was flooded real quick. New Generation choir were first to hit the stage and set the foundation for the evening and they were excellent. With a very strong vocal sound and fantastic band, Federico’s vocal was on point and his skill of leading his choir was fantastic. Next to rapturous applause came IDMC. John hadn’t yet got his Italian together, so a slow English speaking voice had to be the order of the day, but honestly speaking, it wasn’t about what John had said, but more about what IDMC would deliver. From the opening song and throughout the set, IDMC were able to translate Gods’ message by delivering passion through their song set. They sang, danced and clapped, and the audience responded in the same way. People were in tears as IDMC worked their way through the passion on ‘Love’ medley, which showed the UK singers that their message was getting through. The finale was off the chain with both choirs coming together to lift the roof. IDMC’s now classic ‘Victorious’ is the much-loved song doing the circuit in Europe. It was an astonishing end to a great show.   The third and final day of the Italy tour saw both choirs on a day out together in the romantic city of Venice. It allowed the team to enjoy a beautiful time, touring the city, having a ride in a gondola and even singing on the roof of a shopping mall! A totally perfect day, although this made the end journey to the airport and the final goodbye so very difficult. The bond that had been built up over such a short time has guaranteed a return trip to Venice in 2018.
